Salted Deer Skins

Once you have fully prepared your deer skins for tanning by salting, drying, soaking, then cleaning them, you are ready to begin tanning them. One of the most widely used at-home tanning methods is using a salt and alum solution.

For salt and alum tanning, you will need non-iodized or technical grade salt, ammonia alum or potash alum, washing soda, borax, and a non-metallic container. The alum, washing soda, and borax should be available at your local supermarket. The non-metallic container should be the same size as the one you used for the cleaning and preparation process.

Before you begin, you should test a small piece in the solution to see how it affects the fur. If the solution has a negative effect on the fur, you can use a different method with a paste which will only be applied to the skin side.

To prepare the normal solution, dissolve 1 pound (0.4 kilograms) alum for every 1 gallon (3.7 liters) of water. Then, dissolve 4 ounces (113 grams) of washing soda and 8 ounces (226 grams) of salt in ½ gallon (1.8 liters) of water. Slowly pour this soda and salt solution into the alum solution, stirring vigorously. You will need enough of this solution to completely cover the hide. Leave the hide in the solution for 4 to 5 days, depending on its thickness.

For hides that have fur which reacted with the chemicals during the test, you can instead make a paste. Make the solution as described above, but add flour in small amounts until a thin paste is formed. Be careful to avoid having any lumps. Tack the hide to a board with the flesh side up and use a brush to spread the tanning solution about 1/8 inch (3 millimeters) thick. Scrape the solution off the next day and apply a new coat. If the hide is thick, you will have to do this a third time. With the second or third coating, leave it on for 3 to 4 days.

To check if the hide is fully tanned, you can cut off a small piece and boil it in water. If it mostly retains its shape and softness, it is fully tanned. If not, it will need to soak longer. When the hide is fully tanned, it needs two rinses. The first rinse will be in water that has 1 ounce of borax for every gallon of water. The second rinse will be in clean water. Be sure to always squeeze or press your deer hides to remove the water, as wringing will damage the skin or pull out the fur.
